In 2016, @ETIQhour will concentrate on the top 15 Business Etiquette Essentials every future leader will want to know. Each fortnight a new Essential has been released: Essential #3: Mind your manners. You can find out more information about Basic Manners here.

When people ask you how you are, tell them then ask how they are. Always say #Please and #Thankyou. Use a quiet voice inside, especially in places like restaurants. This goes without saying, but even in a very casual professional atmosphere. Never use foul language in front of people if you don’t know if it will bother them. This basic form of courtesy is always imperative. If you bump into somebody, immediately say “Excuse me” or “Pardon me”. Today, sending a thank you e-mail is perfectly acceptable. As you walk through a door, look to see if you can hold it open for someone else. A handwritten #thankyou note is always a nice, personal touch #grateful. Use eating utensils properly. If you are unsure, ask someone or watch others. Good Manners cost nothing but they are priceless. No matter what or when, be respectful and polite. Don’t reach for things at the table; ask to have them passed. When you have any doubt about doing something, ask permission first. Do not interrupt people who are speaking unless there is an emergency. Keep negative opinions to yourself. Treat others the way you’d like to be treated. Knock on closed doors — and wait to see if there’s a response — before entering.
